Understanding Teaser Bets in Sports Betting

Adjust point spreads in your favor by combining multiple selections.

What is a Teaser Bet?

A teaser bet is a type of wager that allows you to adjust the point spread or total line in your favor for multiple selections. A teaser bet gives you an advantage by allowing you to move the lines by a predetermined number of points. Teaser bets must include two or more bets, with some books requiring three or more. Some sportsbooks allow up to 10 bets in a teaser. Similar to parlay betting, every bet in a teaser must win for the teaser to pay out. The most common teaser is a 6-point teaser, which allows you to move the line 6 points in either direction.

Types of Teaser Bets

Point Spread Teaser: You can adjust the point spread in your favor by adding or subtracting points. For example, with a 6-point teaser on two NFL games with original lines at -3 and +7, the new lines would be +3 and +13 after the teaser. Total Teaser: You adjust the total points scored in a game. If the original total is set at 42 points and you have a 6-point teaser, the new total would be 36 for the under and 48 for the over.

Key Strategies

  • Focus on key numbers in football (3 and 7) - move lines past these margins of victory
  • Shop around with different bookmakers for varying teaser options
  • Set a budget and avoid betting more than a predetermined percentage of your bankroll
  • Keep teaser size low (no more than two or three games) to increase chances of winning
  • If one bet ties/pushes, it's typically removed from the teaser (check house rules)

Reverse Teasers (Pleasers)

Pleasers, or reverse teasers, allow you to add or subtract points to bet against yourself. There is a higher risk of losing these bets as pleasers modify the lines in a disadvantageous direction. However, the potential payout offers a greater return. While teaser bets have the potential for high payouts, they come with the risk of being one of the harder bets to win. In most cases, teasers are not the optimal choice for a bettor.
