What is Baccarat?
Baccarat is a classic casino card game known for its elegance and simplicity. Despite its sophisticated reputation, the game requires no skill - the dealing rules are fixed, and players simply bet on the outcome. Two hands are dealt: the "Player" and the "Banker." Your goal is to bet on which hand will have a total closest to 9.
Card Values
Understanding card values is essential:
- Aces: Worth 1 point
- 2-9: Face value (2 = 2 points, 9 = 9 points)
- 10, Jack, Queen, King: Worth 0 points
- If the total exceeds 9, only the second digit counts (15 = 5, 18 = 8)
The Three Bets
Baccarat offers three betting options with different house edges:
- Banker Bet: Wins if Banker hand is closer to 9. Pays 0.95:1 (5% commission). House edge: 1.06% - THE BEST BET
- Player Bet: Wins if Player hand is closer to 9. Pays 1:1. House edge: 1.24%
- Tie Bet: Wins if both hands have equal value. Pays 8:1 or 9:1. House edge: 14.36% - AVOID THIS BET
Drawing Rules
The drawing rules are automatic and handled by the dealer: If either the Player or Banker has 8 or 9 (a "natural"), no more cards are drawn. Player draws on 0-5, stands on 6-7. Banker drawing depends on the Player's third card and follows a fixed chart. You don't need to memorize this - the dealer handles everything. This automatic gameplay means baccarat has no strategy for the dealing itself - only for bet selection.
Optimal Strategy
Baccarat strategy is remarkably simple: 1. Always bet on Banker - it has the lowest house edge at 1.06% 2. Never bet on Tie - the 14%+ house edge makes it a sucker bet 3. Ignore betting systems - Martingale and other systems don't change the house edge 4. Set win/loss limits - Decide beforehand when to walk away 5. Look for commission-free tables - Some casinos offer no-commission baccarat (but read the rules carefully) Baccarat offers some of the best odds in the casino, making it a favorite for high rollers and smart players alike.
