Poker Basics

Poker is unique among casino games because you're playing against other players, not the house. The casino takes a small rake from each pot, but your winnings come from outplaying opponents. Texas Hold'em is the most popular variant, where each player receives two hole cards and shares five community cards to make the best five-card hand.

  • Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank
  • Full House: Three of a kind plus a pair
  • Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence
  • Straight: Five consecutive cards of different suits
  • Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank
  • Two Pair: Two different pairs
  • One Pair: Two cards of the same rank

Position Play

Position is one of the most important concepts in poker. Acting last gives you information about what your opponents have done before you must make a decision. Early Position: Seats immediately after the blinds. Play tight - only premium hands. Middle Position: More flexibility, but still be selective. Late Position (Button/Cutoff): The best seats. You can play more hands and steal blinds. The dealer button is the most advantageous position because you act last on every post-flop betting round.
